How Martial Arts Helped Shape The Landscape of Doctor Strange

Marvel’s Doctor Strange is a odd and psychic adventure into the heart of the Marvel cinematic universe. It’s the story of a Doctor appropriately named Strange who comes into incredible psychic powers after getting into a car accident and seeking non-traditional ways of eastern healing. Once he hones his meta-physical powers he becomes Marvel’s mystic defender – saving Earth from threats that can’t be defeated through traditional physical means.

It is as entertaining as it is confusing at points but just because the powers Strange has are generated by his mind that doesn’t mean there’s any lack of physical action whatsoever as he can channel his mental abilities into physical forces and powers which he uses to fight earthly villains too. The fight sequences in the film are quite mesmerizing and very coordinated and this was all thanks to the rigorous martial arts training that all of the actors and extras went through in order to be properly prepared for the film.

The martial arts did take on a particularly “eastern” feel to them and that was on purpose. The style of martial arts that were infused into the film were that of the oldest forms of Kung Fu, just as was the case in The Matrix movies. This took the actors and extras responsible for participating in the fight scenes several weeks of training in order to get properly antiquated with the martial arts form. The film also featured several ancient staffs, sticks, spears, and blades. All in all, the film was quite the visual adventure but, more importantly, it was a martial arts masterpiece.
