Healing: Martial Arts Can Help Alleviate PTSD

According to recent findings, Martial Arts can help some of the tremendous stress associated with post traumatic stress disorder. Specifically, Brazilian jiu jitsu can help lessen that stress and anxiety associated with the disorder. Why? No one is sure at this point. However, some doctors are hypothesizing that it’s because of the endorphin delivery from the exercise you get while practicing Brazilian jiu jitsu coupled along with the extreme focus the practitioner places on the task at hand during the activity.

Those who have been taking part in this study have seen pretty incredible results. Symptoms like sleep loss and headaches have lessened greatly or disappeared entirely since they started training BJJ regularly. Many military veterans have said that they haven’t felt as good as they have during the period where they were training BJJ since before they joined the military. The vast majority who have taken part in these studies have already committed to remain training Brazilian jiu jitsu after the study ends.

Right now, these studies will continue indefinitely until what exactly is going on here is better understood so that the maximum amount of benefit can be derived from it for the maximum amount of people. The study is also, currently, being tested on military veterans with post traumatic stress disorder rather than on people with PTSD for a variety of different reasons. This is mainly because it’s being used as the control variable in the study at the moment and the study is still only in it’s infancy stages. Regardless, this is a massive step forward for those who suffer from PTSD as a whole. We are much closer to a future where medications with heavy side effects and addictive qualities as well as expensive therapies as a way of treating PTSD may finally be a thing of the past.
